Cake Flowers - Artistic Style Magnolia Flower

My client Jennifer contacted me last month to see if I could recreate a cake flower that she had fell in love with online. The picture of what she fell in love with is the one to the left. At first I thought maybe it was a peony, but this flower has been done in other colors and it really looks more like an artistic version of a magnolia flower.Jennifer's colors are golds, yellows, pinks, oranges and blues. That's kind of a broad color palette, but she's getting married in Jamaica and didn't trust her pastry chef at her venue to recreate it for her. So that's when she contacted me. I was a bit nervous and I think I was somewhat procrastinating working on it, but I realized I had to do it today and so I sat down and tried to figure it out. Luckily I think I came pretty close.
You can be the judge. I had originally quoted her for one large 6" cake flower, but because the petals are so hard to anchor at the base, the flower ended up being 5" and I threw in a slightly smaller one at no charge. I think it will look stunning and be a perfect touch to her destination Jamaica wedding!

Kristy & Hector (Magnolia Bride) June 14, 2008 Style Sheet
The wonderful Melanie "Mimi" Gubser of Luci Lyn Photography sent me some photos from Kristy & Hector's wedding (this is the wedding where Kristy wanted magnolias and gardenias). I created a style sheet of some of the pictures Mimi sent to me today. She's a wonderful up and coming wedding photographer on the Big Island of Hawaii. If you forgot, Cheryl Shoemaker of Orchid Isle Weddings & Events planned this wedding and also referred Kristy to me for all her wedding details.

Anyway, more pictures to come, but since style sheets seem to be so popular, I thought I'd give it a whirl. :) Kristy and Hector were such a wonderful couple to work with and I wish them all the best for a happy and loving marriage! Maybe this style sheet will inspire your next wedding inspiration board....

Magnolia or Gardenia Favors?
Remember my magnolia bride? Well, we're in the process of working on her favors. My immediate first thought was, definitely go with gardenias (they're easier for me to make), as they kind of make me think of Hawaii more, but also I was not sure how my magnolia flowers would turn out. Kristy is having a gardenia in her hair as well as for her bridesmaids and flower girl, so the coordinator and I were thinking tie the gardenia back in to match the hair flowers in the bridal party. Now after making the favors and seeing the way they came out, it's a TOUGH call!

I definitely like BOTH of them a lot! Plus the whole premise of Kristy using the magnolia flower was because of what it meant and how the history and meaning of the magnolia flower embodies who she is and who they are as a couple. We are also using the favor tag as the place card for the families/couples/friends so it's more personalized.
We are going to do magnolia flowers for her cake which I think will look STUNNING! She has a square 3 tier cake in chocolate frosting from Cake Rack of Kona which I think the magnolia flowers will really look awesome!

Candice & Nathan's Wedding 12/1/08
This was a wedding I got via the Mauna Lani Resort's Wedding Department! Candice wanted flowers that would be flush with her cake, but that would match her wedding colors - wine/burgandy and cantaloupe/peach.

We decided to do cherry blossom cake flowers. The photographer for this wedding is one of my favorite photographers on the Big Island - Bob Brown of Eye Expression Photography! Thanks Bob for the awesome photos! You can see Bob's work at http://www.eyeexpression.com/.
