DK Designs Clay Peony Cake Flowers

Although, I'm fighting yet another cold or flu like illness today, I am still hard at work. Holidays and illness for the most part don't put a stop to my work. Sad but true. So even on New Year's Eve, I'm working. I've been so anxious to get my cake flowers done and up on my Etsy site. So far I have the large elongated petal style of gardenia flowers up and just now I posted the large 5 inch all ivory peonies. Inspired by the cake flowers I did for a cake designer in Florida. I'm planning to launch a few other colors in the coming days as time permits. I'm hoping to do ranunculus as well, since that's one of my favorites too. :)

So, I'm recommitting to getting my Etsy site loaded up with items to sell again. It's going to take a little while, but I plan on having some new bouquets and other items to sell in January. Until then, Happy New Year and may 2009 bring all of you good health and prosperity!

Real Wedding - Grace & Kyle

My dear friend and colleague, Dianna Shitanishi of Hawaii Weddings & Events contacted me in early December and asked if I could help her on another wedding. I hate to say "no" to Dianna because she has brought a lot of business my way and although I was busy, I agreed to do her order. Her clients were getting married on December 28, 2008 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in the heart of Waikiki. Dianna requested teal blue and purple and the clients wanted peacock feathers to help with the decor. They also wanted their own monogram. Dianna enlisted my help. She asked me to make the table number cards, the reserved signs, the monogram design for the gobo projection, the stickers for the candy buffet bags and the candy buffet signs. These are some highlights of the reception for Grace & Kyle.

This was a HUGE wedding... 450 guests! Dianna and I chatted last night and she said that one of the guests asked if this was a "platinum wedding"? It's definitely lavish with the rich gold, purples and teal running throughout the entire reception. Thank goodness the power outage that the island of Oahu endured was two days before the wedding, but Dianna said although it caused some issues for managing the final timelines, everything turned out beautifully. The sign of a good wedding planner! Some residents were without power for over 20 hours!

Dianna hired Dave Miyamoto Photography to photograph the ballroom and detail shots before the wedding reception began. The actual photographer hired to do the wedding was Frank Amodo Photography. Both very talented professionals in my book. Can't wait to eventually see the wedding photographs as well. Thanks to Dianna and Dave for sharing the photos with me. She has many years of experience in wedding & event planning.

DK Designs Clay Gardenia Cake Flowers

So, this evening just before my clay class, I got a notification that 2 of my items on Etsy sold. I was so excited, so I went to see what the buyer had purchased. It was my hair comb with all the little mini clay flowers and one of my gardenia hair flowers. I guess I need to start making more clay flower hair combs in the coming weeks.

Well, my cake flowers aren't even completely dry, but I had to put up more items. This is something that a few clients had asked me to make and I've just been so busy that I haven't had a chance to make them available for purchase without doing a custom order. So here it is.... my line of cake flowers. The price is $140 and so if you break down 4 flowers comes out to $35/each. Which I have to say is reasonable considering that 1. sugar art gardenia flowers that are roughly 5-5.5 inches in diameter run $275/flower, 2. gardenias aren't always in season and if they are, there's no guarantee that the edges of the flowers won't brown by the time your photographer is able to take pictures, and 3. you can keep them to treasure well after your wedding and bugs won't eat them! :)
So, in the coming weeks, I'll be launching a few other cake flower offerings on my site... Stay tuned...

Happy New Year! - Year of the Ox (Clay Figurines)

It's hard to believe 2009 is almost upon us. Where the heck did the time go??? Well, part of Japanese tradition is the New Year's Day celebration. At DECO Clay Craft Academy, they often bring in holiday kits for Christmas and New Year's. This year the studio taught how to make this cute little ox out of clay. It's not the same DECO clay everyone is used to, that we make flowers out of. This is a much harder clay, almost the consistency of cement. Anyway, since I didn't have the opportunity to learn it from Yukiko, I had to figure it out on my own and this is how the ox came out. Not bad. She needs a little touch up paint as the clay cracks are showing through.

I'm hard at work making products to sell through my Etsy site as well as Estilo Weddings and samples and orders for other clients. May the new year bring each and every one of you, much joy, happiness, good health and prosperity!

DK Designs Clay Flower Hair Comb on Etsy Home Page!

An hour or so ago, a few people via Etsy told me that I was on the home page. Of course, by the time I got the emails, it already was gone so for the last hour I've been anxiously waiting to see if I could catch it! I got featured on the Etsy Gift Guides - Weddings category! It's a picture of my recently posted clay flower hair comb with miniature roses and tropical flowers perfect for a bride or flower girl.

Here's a screen shot! It's an honor to be the one highlighted amongst all the wonderful Etsy wedding artisans! I was wondering why this morning my views per item shot up!

Custom Clay Flower Arrangement - Reds, Pinks and Whites

Well, so much for not working on Christmas Day! LOL... But when you have a deadline, that's what happens. Plus, I took advantage of Aidan's nap time so I could finish the final piece to Ela & Kelby's order. When I first met Ela and her family to discuss the bouquets, her aunt came along and was so impressed with the flowers that she asked if I could make her an arrangement for her home. She asked for a specific color palette which was reds, pinks and whites. Her only real request was that she really liked red peonies. So this is the end result.
I haven't often done Casablanca lilies, but I decided to do this particular flower also because not only is it beautiful, but it's very expansive. I think the 3 lilies really is the perfect mix among the red peonies, red roses, fuchsia pink ranunculus and the coral pink roses. Plus the white vase adds another nice contrast to the flowers themselves. Lilies are known to be very fragrant which is why some people don't like them. The nice thing about clay lilies, they have no scent so you can enjoy their beauty without being overwhelmed by their scent! :) Hmm... do I dare start working on flowers to try and make quick arrangements for family members for a Christmas get-together tomorrow??? Hmm...

Merry Christmas from DK Designs

It's so hard to believe that Christmas is already here! What happened to the rest of the year? It definitely has gone by in a blur. Although I did some work today, I spent Christmas Eve with my family and relatives. Christmas Eve is when almost all of my relatives on my mom's side get together. I got to see cousins I haven't seen since our wedding. Some of my relatives have been through a lot this year, so to see them tonight was a wonderful sight and it made us really remember what Christmas and this holiday season is all about... spending time with those we love and remembering what is important in life... our loved ones!


So from my family to you and yours, we wish you all a very Merry Christmas or for those of you who celebrate other holidays and not Christmas, Happy Holidays to you as well. I'm going to enjoy a couple of days off with my family, especially my husband and son. They have sacrificed a lot for me this past year with all my successes and growth and I'm so very thankful to them for all their love and patience.

New Items in My Etsy Shop

I've been behind the 8 ball in trying to get more items posted on my Etsy storefront. I'm sure those who look at my site must think I'm not working on my store anymore... Definitely not the case. My Etsy shop has been a WONDERFUL experience for me. It's been a great marketing tool and I didn't even set it up to be that way. The likes of Martha Stewart and Estilo Weddings found me via my shop and so many other wedding industry blogs out there. It's definitely one of those things that I am SO glad that I did.
Anyway, my shop has been kind put on the back burner because I've been so busy with all my wedding orders. It's been non-stop crazy since November of last year. It still amazes me how much has happened in one year's time. So, after two more of my items sold today, I realized I needed to add a couple new items to my shop. This is what I came up with. The Tropical Punch II is one of my favorites. I just made the flowers today (with the exception of the orchids and the tuberose). I only wish I could keep it because the colors really pop and are so "alive". I think that's one thing I LOVE about making the flowers, finding the right color combinations and color palettes. If you only knew me when I started learning DECO Clay, all my projects were like a rainbow sherbet color (pastel pinks, greens, peaches and yellows). When I started my own business, I really had to challenge myself to try bold and vibrant colors.

The other is a hair comb that I made a while ago and finally decided it was time to post it as I'm sure it will do well with my wedding clients. I think it would be wonderful over a beautiful bridal veil or for a flower girl. Mini stephanotis with Swarovski rhinestone crystals, mini tuberose and mini roses. Heck, everything is mini, but believe me even mini is a lot of work. Lots of detail and lots of flowers, that's for sure.I hope that over the holidays as I'm busy trying to work on some projects and samples for clients, magazines and wholesalers that I will have the opportunity to make extra flowers so that I can add to my Etsy shop. The goal is to add some wonderful cake flowers (like the ones I described in my previous blog post). Stay tuned...

All White Peony Cake Flowers - For a Cake Designer in Florida

Several weeks back, Cindy of Cakes by Cindy and Glenn in Vero Beach, Florida, contacted me to see if I would be willing to work with them to create flowers for their cake orders. We went back and forth on what flowers costs. She did have an immediate need. She sent me a link to a cake photo from Brides.com, which you see to above.

She asked if I could do them in clay, but to make them off-white as I guess her buttercream frosting is slightly off-white. So this is how they turned out. I have a feeling I'll be making a lot more of the peony cake flowers and other cake flowers as time goes on. Which is great. They are stunning and you don't need very many to make the cake look beautiful! I can't wait to see what Cindy & Glenn's cake creation looks like when they are done and embellished with my clay flowers! I just got an email from Cindy and she said they look amazing!

Holiday Bouquets - Boutonnieres

Since I now have my wonderful new flash, I can take pictures any time of the day. Granted natural lighting is best, but this new flash allows me to get really decent shots so I can post pictures and not have to wait for the sun to be shining. With winter and forecasted rain, good thing for this new flash! LOL... These are the final pieces of Ela & Kelby's order.

I managed to finish the boutonnieres to go along with the bouquets - 8 in total. The groom's boutonniere contains the cymbidium orchid, an orchid bud and a peony bud. The groomsmen is also a cymbidium orchid, but with tuberose. The fathers have a cup style rose with the cymbidium orchid.

You have no idea how glad I am to have this order complete. I still have a centerpiece arrangement to make for the client, but luckily I can ship that afterwards. I think this has to be the largest bridal bouquet order I had.

It's been a crazy and amazing year for me and I'm looking forward to another big year in 2009! I'm so very appreciative of all the opportunities I have been presented with and thank you to all my clients who trusted in me to create everlasting bridal bouquets and centerpieces as well as to all my wedding stationery clients, who allowed me to design beautiful wedding details for their wedding day!

It'll be interesting to see if the clay flowers take over the bulk of my business. The way things are shaping up for my bookings for 2009, it looks as though the clay flowers will be about 80% of my business, but normally the invitations come through when I least expect it.

Holiday Bouquets - Bridal Party Bouquets Complete

Just about 10 minutes ago I finished the holiday bouquets for Ela & Kelby. This is how they turned out. She had as I mentioned before, 5 bridesmaids, 2 mother bouquets and 1 aunt bouquet in addition to her bridal bouquet. Tomorrow I will have more images of her boutonnieres. The cymbidiums for this order I varied slightly as I painted the centers more of a reddish tone rather than the pinkish centers I normally paint with. I think it really adds to the richness and brings out the red color palette! The order is almost complete!

I took these images using my new flash that I bought as my Christmas present to myself. Can't really tell that there was no natural lighting. What a difference a good flash makes!

My son is anxiously awaiting my completion of this order so that I will spend time with him while he is out of school. Although I still have a lot to get done between now and Christmas as I have 2 orders still to try and complete. It seriously never ends in my world of work. I was hoping to do some Christmas shopping for my son, but that's going to now have to wait until Sunday night. LOL...

Holiday Bouquets - Work in Progress

Sorry for the lag in the blog posts. I've been busy trying to catch up on orders before the holidays and taking care of my son who has croup. Don't ask me how it all gets done... It just somehow does. :)

I've been busy at work on a big bridal order. This order is for Ela & Kelby. They had contacted me just before I left Oahu to move to California and they took one of my classes to try their hand at making their own flowers. It was really cute to see Ela's fiance take an interest in trying to learn. They asked later on if they could meet me when I was going to be visiting the islands again to discuss bouquets and boutonnieres. So when I returned in May for a short visit, we met and they decided to book the order with me. It's really ambitious to try and make your own flowers, but if it's a new craft, it's not always a good thing because as a bride you have so many other things to plan and do that sometimes it's just best to leave the flowers to the professionals.

Ela's order consists of 9 bouquets and 8 boutonnieres. Her colors and flowers she wanted are: greens (green cymbidium orchids), reds (red peonies) and whites (roses and stephanotis). I thought this was a nice twist on the mothers' flowers, instead of doing traditional corsages, they decided to do bouquets for their moms as well.

These are work in progress pictures. I will have more photos on Saturday, but these are the bouquets I've done so far (before the painting process). I love the colors. It is very holiday-ish with a tropical twist. :) Plus, you can't get peonies in winter so clay peonies are a great solution! :)

This happens to be my last big bouquet order for 2008! Boy it has been an EXTREMELY BUSY 2008! I still have one more large invitation order to get out the door before the end of the year. I hope to enjoy a little bit of down time, but unfortunately not for very long as I have lots of little samples and orders to start tackling. My goal is to get a few orders out in January-February time frame so that my March - July isn't as crazy as it is forecasted to be. We'll see how that all goes.

For those of you interested in clay flowers for your wedding, DK Designs is for the most part, officially booked from March to mid July. But definitely contact me if you have weddings in March, June, or July as there are still a few openings. As I have a hard time saying "no" I might just agree to take your order!

Real Wedding - Elizabeth & Marlon, A Destination Wedding in Mexico

Another one of my clients, Elizabeth just sent me some wonderful photos from her destination wedding that took place in Playa Del Carmen in Mexico. She too had this to say in her email:

I just wanted to thank you again for your wonderful job on the items you designed for my wedding. I just wanted to give you a quick update and send you some pictures. My destination wedding was fantastic. I loved all my items and enjoyed my bouquet to the fullest. I packed my items in a box and traveled with them with no problems to Playa Del Carmen. Everything arrived just fine and nothing was damaged. I was quite impressed. My bouquet is still sitting in the same condition I received it. Here are some fun pics and again thanks so much. If you need any recommendations which I doubt since your work is fabulous I will be more than happy to. I hope to keep in touch. I know I will keep you in touch for further needs. Thanks.

The very interesting thing about this wedding order is that it initially just started as a guest book order and then Elizabeth saw all the clay florals I did and was very intrigued. We did her bouquet, corsages and boutonnieres and her hair accessory as well. What a beautiful destination wedding!

Real Wedding - Jessica & Chris

I received an email today from a former client/bride with photos from her wedding. She got married in September. She contacted me in June asking if I could recreate my Tasha bouquet for her as she REALLY wanted me to make her bouquet and she persisted until I said, "yes". Even though I had a really hectic September, I agreed to do it and I used the Tasha bouquet as inspiration, but modified it slightly so now it's the Jessica bouquet!

I really enjoy seeing photos of my work from the wedding day and to hear how happy my brides are with their flowers. Plus for those who are skeptical about going with clay flowers, the real wedding day photos really showcase how real the flowers do look and the fact that my clients will forever have a bouquet to remember their wedding day by!

I got an email from Miss Pineapple (now Mrs. Pineapple) the other day and she shared a wonderful story. She said that when they were taking photos in Philadelphia in the city they were near a sculpture and she accidentally hit the bridal bouquet I made for her and she said that everyone gasped thinking it broke and to everyone's surprise, not a petal moved. Now that's a true testament to how durable these flowers really are! She even said that as they passed people in the city they all commented on how lovely the flowers are. Comments and feedback like this make me so happy and that's why I LOVE what I do!

Proposal in Paradise Launches Lea McIntosh's Ready to Propose Custom Proposals & Concierge

I posted several months ago about a new company that was developed and envisioned by my friend, Lea McIntosh who is a wonderful event designer and event planner in the Bay Area, appropriately called "Ready to Propose". She wanted to really kick off her company with something BIG and she did just that. She teamed up with Andrew Hsu of Studio MSV, a talented filmmaker and videographer and 17 of the best wedding professionals in the Bay Area to create a Proposal in Paradise. What do you get when you put 18 talented wedding professionals in one room? You get what's called Vendor Chic! The talents of these two individuals brought together the BEST of the BEST to create a romantic, sexy proposal video that would impress anyone. This particular Vendor Chic as I mentioned, kicks off Lea McIntosh's new company, Ready to Propose! The perfect answer for the guy who wants to do a special, customized proposal for the love of his life but has no idea on what to do. Lea and her team can create something amazing, romantic and a proposal she won't ever forget! As you watch this video, could you imagine this being you and your significant other putting this elaborate plan and magical day together just to propose? Lea has no shortage of AMAZING ideas and I'm so happy for her in her new endeavor and I know it's going to be successful.

I was fortunate to meet Lea through Stacie Tamaki of The Flirty Guide and we just so happened to meet just prior to the video shoot. She saw my clay flowers and invitations and thought they were the perfect fit for her "Proposal in Paradise" concept. I was so honored to be asked to be part of this wonderful project. The most amazing part is my tiare hair flower is in almost every frame of the video. Another Wedding Vendor GTG

My wonderful wedding colleague and dear friend, Debbie Friedrich of the illustrious and awesome Debbie Friedrich Photography was up from San Diego visiting the Bay Area. One of her former wedding clients just had a baby girl and they asked her to come up and do newborn photos. Just so happened they live very close to where I live and we met at Valley Fair Mall for lunch. I haven't seen Debbie since October 2007, where I met her for the first time at a wedding I was helping as a back-up coordinator. Debbie as you know is the reason why I started blogging! It was so much fun to see her on a social visit and just hang out and chat.

Too bad she had to head back to a company party that she was attending with her hubby back in the East Bay because I think we could have just kept talking and probably do some damage at the mall shopping! LOL.

If you're looking for a WONDERFUL photographer who has an amazing eye for photography and definitely shoots from the heart, Debbie is the photographer for you! She is such a beautiful person inside and out. So passionate about what she does and it's an honor to know her and be her friend! She does travel and do weddings all over CA and Hawaii.

Debbie inspires me to continue doing what I love to do and to always strive for more and be passionate about it! I am so happy and fortunate to know and befriend so many talented women in this industry. Not only is she a successful and talented wedding photographer but also a wonderful mother and wife. She juggles it all which is another reason why she inspires me.

It's so funny because she just posted her next photo that's a companion photo to her "Sunkiss" picture titled, "Flare" on her blog (http://www.shootingfromtheheart.typepad.com/) and I told her I want to order it. Turns out she told me the story the day those photos were taken she was taking pictures of the favors and place cards that I did for her client's wedding (the first time I met her). Maybe that's why I'm so drawn to these photos. Needless to say, Debbie does amazing work whether its of plant life, weddings, portraits, or lifestyle pictures. She's one of my favorite photographers and I can't wait to one day head down south and have her photograph my husband and son for a family portrait session. :) Hopefully sometime next year before my wedding season starts going crazy!

Custom Cake Topper - Collaboration with The Flirty Bride!

A few months ago, Stacie Tamaki asked me if I could make her 3 green cymbidium orchids for a custom cake topper or should I say desk decor for our wedding colleague and friend, Evonne Wong of Events by Evonne. So I agreed. The inspiration comes from a post that Stacie did on the Flirty Guide blog and Evonne asked if Stacie could make her custom dragonflies. The inspiration comes actually from Evonne's tattoo which has a dragonfly flying above cymbidium orchids. So Stacie and I collaborated and she told me what she was envisioning and this is how it turned out. I haven't spoken to Evonne since she left for San Francisco, but I'm sure she was floored and happy with how it all came together. I really enjoyed the opportunity to collaborate with such a wonderful designer, Stacie Tamaki of The Flirty Bride and hope this may lead to more collaboration opportunities. :) She does amazing work with beads. I thought I am crazy with making clay flowers, but she's even crazier than me with what she can do with beads. I can't wait to show you one of her custom cake toppers. Coming hopefully later today! An exciting project that a group of wonderful wedding professionals in the Bay Area collaborated on last month! Very exciting so stay tuned for that.... :)

A Day in the Life of a Fill-in-Wedding Planner Day 2 and 3

Sorry for the time lag in the blog posts, but the wedding took up the whole entire trip and a lot of late nights! I'm finally back in the Bay Area and I have to say, it was a WONDERFUL experience and a BEAUTIFUL and FUN wedding! I do give my hats off to wedding planners and designers because I could not do this as a profession. I was honored that Cheryl of Orchid Isle Weddings and Events asked me to fill in for her while she's preparing for her 2nd child, but boy was it a lot of work. Friday started out with my on-site visit with the SeaWatch Restaurant as I got a tour of the restaurant and ceremony location, followed by meeting with the florist Leah Robb. From there I trekked my way up to Ka'anapali to see if Honolulu Cookie Company could provide me with 612 cookies since the bride's custom chocolates were delivered to her fiance's office and not to the hotel! So I managed to get some time to shop at my favorite stores while I waited for the cookie order to be filled! From there I rushed back to drop off the items and get back to the ceremony location to do the rehearsal. The rehearsal went really well and then it was a quick trip to Kihei to get take out and head back to the hotel to do all the prep work for Saturday. Here's a picture too of their custom OOT welcome bags. Each guest received a bag filled with a 5 day itinerary of things to do, a local Maui guide, 2 beach towels embroidered with their logo, beach hats and beach mats and a custom CD designed by the bride using my logo from the wedding invitation! What a nice arrival gift for all their guests.
I didn't spend much time getting to see the grounds of the Grand Wailea Resort. I spent my time running errands or doing prep work in my room. So the only shot I took was this one of the lobby. What a beautiful resort, but I guess I'll have to visit it next time to really enjoy it!I realized when putting the favors together that I did not print 3 of the guest names so I was in a panic, but had a plan, I had 2 hours in the morning where I could figure out what I could do to make sure I had the 3 names and 3 favors done. I needed one lauhala box and cardstock. I had to drive up to Kahului to get it which is a half hour away. I got a little lost, but managed to get back by 10:45 a.m. Met with the bride to pick up the marriage license her 2nd pair of shoes and headed to the ceremony/reception location to set up. I was responsible for setting up the welcome tables with the favor box/placecards, get the guestbook/picture table set and put the lanterns, programs and fans out for the guests. Needless to say for one person to do is a lot, but I just kept moving. It was non-stop moving and so my 1 hour of sun was not spent on the beach, but at the Molokini Lookout setting up. LOL...The vendors I had the opportunity to work with were AWESOME. I am so excited to see the professional photos from Amity Mason Photography. She's an amazing photographer and so down to earth. After she gets back from her trip to South Africa and Egypt, she'll be sending out photos (January)! Can't wait. :) Derick Sebastian and his musical talents filled the ceremony location with beautiful Hawaiian music. He also sang as a duo during the cocktail reception. Very professional and on-time. I highly recommend him if you're looking for local talent for your event. Reverend Al Terry was AMAZING... He was so cute how he asked the bride and groom to kiss each other after exchanging the leis. His ceremony was beautiful and he also added a touch of humor. Although our ceremony started late and he had another wedding just after Alyssa and Daniel's he did a great job and did not rush it. A true professional! Tihati Productions also provided us with a great conch shell blower and Brandon did a fabulous job!From there I rushed down in my golf cart back to the reception to make sure all was set up according to Alyssa's instructions and the SeaWatch Restaurant and Leah Robb's team at Maui Elegance Floral Design did a great job. These are some shots before the tables were lit. DJ Dan did a great job keeping the guests entertained. He is truly a great entertainer and he had the house rocking. Even the SeaWatch general manager said it was the most high-energy/fun wedding they have had there to date!
All in all, it was a fabulous day and Alyssa and Daniel clearly had a great time. She was gorgeous in her Vera Wang vintage inspired gown and Daniel in his ivory Tommy Bahama long sleeved shirt and khaki colored slacks, accented by a beautiful maile lei intertwined with blue hyacinth. Alyssa's bouquet was a mixture of white roses, stephanotis with pearl centers, cattelya orchids with the striking purple center with white dendrobium orchids cascading down. Her bridesmaids had orange bouquets with mango callas, pin cushion proteas and orange roses.
The whole trip I was sick and it made it more difficult to really be on my "A" game, but I ignored being sick so that I could provide Alyssa and Daniel the best day-of wedding coordination possible and I think I did the best job possible and hope that the bride and groom had a memorable and fun-filled wedding day! Thank you to all the vendors who helped make their day the most special day in their lives.

Now, it's back to DK Designs orders. I really enjoyed the opportunity to coordinate the wedding for my clients who ordered my printed items. It was nice to finally see the fruits of my labor!

Alyssa and Daniel appropriately picked "Because Love Should be Celebrated" as their theme of their wedding and their love was definitely celebrated on that day!
